【璞素】Púsù in South Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Elegant and modern interior design of Púsù restaurant in Brooklyn, featuring sleek furniture and ambient lighting.

If you’re craving exceptional Chinese cuisine with an elevated touch, Púsù (璞素) in South Williamsburg, Brooklyn might just be your next go-to.

Originally known as a vegan Chinese restaurant, I recently discovered that Púsù quietly shifted away from its fully plant-based menu. Curious to see how the food holds up, I returned with a group of friends—and I’m so glad I did.

As someone who’s pescatarian (but love vegan food!), I was excited to see if their bold flavors still delivered. While no longer 100% vegan, Púsù still brings a beautiful mix of plant-forward dishes and refined Chinese flavors that are worth a visit.

In Chinese, Púsù (璞素) translates to uncut gems — a fitting name for a restaurant that blends natural ingredients with understated elegance.

Founded by Chef Owen (Jinlin) Liu, who has over 24 years of culinary experience evident in every bite, Púsù started as a modern vegan Chinese restaurant rooted in tradition. It has since expanded to include meat options to cater to a more diverse clientele.

Now joined by Chef Lisa (Chen Li) — known for her inventive modern desserts — the restaurant continues to evolve.

I’ve always wanted to try their drinks, but every time I visit, it seems to be the wrong time for cocktails. However, they do serve mocktails, and they even custom-made a drink for me! I wasn’t sure what to choose, so I asked them to surprise me with their creations — which I didn't see on the menu.

final thoughts

On my second visit to Púsù, I arrived early and was surprised by how busy it had gotten — but then again, the weather was finally warming up, and my first visit (with my partner and brother) was in the dead of winter.

Slits within the walls

The architecture is still just as stunning. The wooden panels, warm lighting, and museum-like interior give it such a unique character — it’s one of the most aesthetically designed restaurants in Brooklyn.

The food? Incredible.

I’m still surprised (in a good way!) that they expanded their menu to include non-vegan dishes. While I initially visited because it was a vegan Chinese spot, it makes sense that they’re opening up to a wider audience. It’s a smart move for them — and honestly, the quality hasn’t dropped at all.

Service was lovely overall. One of the staff members really stood out — she was super kind and even helped me choose a mocktail. That said, a few other servers seemed a bit MIA at times, maybe because of the weekend rush?

But the vibe of the space made up for it. I loved seeing so many families and groups enjoying their time there — Púsù clearly has a loyal crowd.

One small thing to note: while the wall slits add an artsy touch with the way light flows in, they can make the space drafty in winter. They had heaters to help, but it was still a bit chilly last time. Just something to keep in mind if you’re visiting in colder months.

Overall, Púsù continues to impress — not just with its food, but with its design, service, and evolving menu. We’ll definitely be back again to try more of their drinks and soak in that beautiful ambiance. 💫
