The National Taichung Theater, also known as the Metropolitan Opera House, is a stunning opera house that opened its doors in 2016. It was designed by the Japanese architect Toyo Ito in collaboration with Cecil Balmond, and the building's architecture is seriously a masterpiece.
The building is curved with beautiful lines that are sculpted around the exterior. With six floors that spiral up, the opera house offers a wide range of dining and shopping options. The front entrance of the building features a large, mesmerizing ground-level water fountain that shoots up and dances around. As an architecture enthusiast, I was immediately drawn to the theater's immaculate design.
In this blog post, we’ll explore what to do and see at the National Taichung Theater. Additionally, I’ll provide recommendations for nearby attractions and other points of interest!
things to do
Admire the exterior
The architecture design of the National Taichung Theater is truly stunning. I absolutely love the shapes and layout of this masterpiece.
You can walk around outside and explore the different shapes and curves of this stunning building.
VVG Theater Café
This spacious cafe is located on the first floor of the National Taichung Theater. It wasn't as packed as the other cafes and restaurants on the upper level due to it having more of a cafeteria vibe, but the food was actually super good!
There was so much for us to eat, and we ordered smoothies and brown sugar milk tea with tiramisu as dessert to end our lunch!
Shop
After our lunch, we decided to walk around the shops on the first floor to burn off some of the food we ate. There were also shops on different. levels inside the National Taichung Theater.
The stores had an artistic vibe and offered a variety of items such as artwork, stationery, home products, fashion items, and more.
I even bought sunglasses there! 🙃🕶️
Admire the interior
When visiting the National Taichung Theater, I recommend taking some time to admire the interior architecture. The stunning lights create a shadowy effect, and the spiral staircase leads up to the third floor. Don’t worry, there's also an elevator available!
The inside is just absolutely beautiful!
VVG Food Play
Located on the 5th floor, this restaurant offers Italian and French-inspired cuisine with a large dining area that gives off a lavish vibe.
It tends to get crowded quickly, especially during Taiwanese holidays, so making a reservation is recommended.
Remember that it may be difficult to secure a table during holidays. We couldn't dine at this restaurant during my first visit to the National Taichung Theater due to the 228 Holiday (Taiwanese Memorial Day).
However, when Gabe and I visited with my parents for the second time, we could dine there!
The food was good but not outstanding. However, it was still a worthwhile experience.
I recommend requesting a table by the window to enjoy the stunning view outside.
